Program Offered
The Institut de Théologie de la Compagnie de Jésus (ITCJ) is ready and willing to welcome and host CTEWC international visiting scholars who are professors and/or researchers.
ITCJ is located in Abidjan, the capital of Ivory Coast–a very intellectual, cultural and religious city, whose dynamism and vibrant life rhythm makes it the most attractive city of West Africa and of Francophone Africa. The Institute is in one of the new and fast-growing suburbs of such an appealing city.
The CTEWC Visiting Professor would be part of our newly established Fabien Eboussi International Visiting Professor and Researcher Program, which is a branch of our newly inaugurated international office, the International Network and Global Partnership. The active participation of the Visiting Professors to the life and activities of the Institute would grant them the status of International Associate Researchers in the Center for African Studies and Intercultural Dialogue.
This visiting professor program offers opportunities
- to teach (fundamental courses, seminars, elective courses)
- to co-teach or team-teach
- to do research
- to give a lecture or series of lectures
Teaching opportunities are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching responsibilities can be negotiated based on length of stay, and a monthly stipend of $100-200 is offered for teaching. Courses taught are based on the visiting scholars’ expertise and the needs of ITCJ. All teaching, lecturing, and research can be conducted in French or English, with the exception of fundamental/core courses, for which French is required.
Researchers are provided access to the library (at the best library in the West African region) and either their own office or shared office space.
Seeking Scholars
The ITCJ welcomes scholars in any stage of their career (post-doc to retired) and can accept lay and religious women and men. It is possible for a spouse to accompany a visiting professor, but families cannot be accommodated. Inquiries about a professor exchange between Dharmaram and the visiting professor’s home institution are welcome.
Length of Program
Length of stay can vary by type of work. Lecturers would stay for 2-3 weeks, researchers for 5-6 weeks, and visiting scholars who are teaching and researching can stay for 5-6 weeks, 2 months, or 3 months.
- First Semester: mid-September through the end of January
- Second Semester: mid-February through mid-June
Program Logistics
French is the official language of the Institute, and English is spoken and understood by many. The Institute can happily provide accommodations for the visiting professor (housing and food) at the Jesuit residence, along with access to basic primary health care. Accommodations are air-conditioned single bedrooms (bathroom, WC, showers, hot water, filtered water, and laundry included). 24 hour WiFi access and a TV room are available, as well as the Jesuit residence shuttle mini-van ride to the nearest major train station.
A spouse is invited to stay with the visiting professor, especially for those planning a short term stay (with the understanding that an extra twin bed would be provided, as we have no double beds). For those who would be planning to stay for a semester or a year with their (non-teaching) spouses, we would deal with it case by case and we would discuss it with those involved as this would required an additional commitment from us.
No pets are permitted, and no smoking in rooms or buildings. A visa and flights would be arranged following acceptance to this program.
